You are My Sunshine

You are my sunshine
My only sunshine
You make me happy
When skies are gray
You’ll never know dear
How much I love you
Please don’t take my sunshine away.

This was the song that I sang all the time to my daughters when they were tiny…during middle of the night feedings, bouncing them during the cranky moments of the day, really anytime! So these days, the girls are so much older, 8 and 6 now. But whenever they ask me to sing a song, this is my go to song.

Earlier this week, my Facebook memory from a year ago was Sophia walking down the path in our neighborhood, clipboard in hand, singing You are My Sunshine. It was at the beginning of the pandemic, we were walking with snow on the ground, completing a scavenger hunt. And she just burst into song as she was walking, without a care in the world.

Fast forward to a year later…Tonight in the office, Sophia was standing in my office and just started singing You are My Sunshine. No prompting, all her. I made her come out into the kitchen so I could grab my phone to take a video. She stood there and sang for me, melting my heart.

  1. Just this morning I kept hearing “You are the sunshine of my life” in my head and kept thinking about my daughter. I was thinking of that as a potential blog post. And now here’s this. How sweet that Sophia is so attuned to that song and you.

  2. I have forgotten this song and I am always trying to think of songs to sing to my grandson, Henry. I am a bit tired of “The Wheels on the Bus” and “Old McDonalds Farm” so I must thank you. What a sweet and tender moment and what a beautiful memory to hold in your heart.
