As an avid reader, I think authors are like superheroes. They write these amazing stories that can take you worlds away. They write words that can show you the truth. They help you learn. They make you laugh. They keep you wanting more.
So, when I saw an opportunity to take my girls to a bookstore to meet five authors, I jumped at the chance!
We rushed through lunch so we could get in the car to be on our way. As we were driving, the girls were somewhat impatient, constantly asking if we were almost there. When we finally arrived, we had trouble finding a place to park, but eventually headed to the parking garage. We walked through the sunny but windy day to the bookstore.
As we walked into the bookstore, the girls immediately began to look at the books. They saw some that they had read and others that they actually owned! We made it to the back of the store, which was practically empty, except for the authors. The five authors welcomed us and engaged the girls from the start. Looking at their books, we found one for each of the girls that would be a great fit. We walked back to the front of the store, bought our books, and headed back to the authors.
Two of the authors, Amy Logan and Deepali Punwani, came over once they saw that the girls had one of their books. Each of these ladies took the time to talk with the girls, sign their books, and take a picture with them. They were lovely!
We watched and listed to the authors as they told us about their inspiration and read us stories. The girls answered questions and shared their thoughts. They loved every minute!
Afterwards, we walked around the store looking at the books…and I didn’t walk out with any additional books! That is a new thing for me! As we were getting ready to leave, Sophia asked, “Can we go say goodbye to the authors?” Umm…of course! We walked back and Sophia said goodby to Deepali and she gave us all a hug.
To all the authors out there, thank you for inspiring my girls and readers everywhere. Thank you for being superheroes!
