Early Mornings

Slice of Life Day 3

I have been a morning person for a long time. I loved the feeling of being awake before everyone else and enjoying the quiet of the morning. It was a chance to take time for me and to prepare myself for the day ahead.

However, that has changed since having my girls. I often stay in bed for as long as I can, savoring each moment of relaxation before the craziness of the day begins. Or the girls come in and wake me up, much too soon for my liking.

This morning, I got up to the savor the stillness. I made my cup of tea and snuggled under a blanket on the couch. Feeling comfy, I began to write. Before I could finish, I heard the sweet sounds of Sophia singing. A moment later, I heard the familiar sound of footsteps heading down the stairs. I looked up expecting to see Sophia, but instead I found Isabella. I put the computer aside to enjoy some early morning snuggles. And now as I write, both girls have joined me.

While my mornings are no longer full of quiet, peaceful time for myself, they are still my favorite parts of my day. I would never pass up the opportunity for snuggles with my girls. Here’s to the start of a wonderful day!

  1. As a parent you learn to savor the quiet mornings. With little kids there aren’t that many. As they grow the “my time” grows too. Your slice showed a loving appreciation that both are good – the quiet mornings and the kid time. I love a cup of tea, comfort of a sofa, and reading-writing time on weekend mornings.

  2. That early morning time is a tremendous gift. And, as you captured so well, so too is the sound of our kids making their way to us for another day.
    Thanks for writing this!

  3. You are enjoying each moment as it comes and for what it is. That is as it should be. Before you know it, your girls will be grown and you will find yourself with quiet early morning times again. (I speak from experience.) 🙂 I am happy for you for living in the moment and enjoying it!

  4. I love how your slice spans the moments and minutes before and after your girls awoke and manages to maintain the serenity you have come to associate with this time of the day. Too often, at my house, the rise of the troops sends me into a tailspin, so I am so glad that you were able to keep writing within the snuggle-spot with your girls. Happy SOL Sunday!

  5. I love the early morning as well- I am typically the first one up in my house. Whether 5am or 7am, I like having the time to myself- even with the 2 kids getting up so after! You are right- mornings do shift when you have children. I think time by oneself is necessary for mental health. Whether a quiet moment of meditation or prayer, a workout, or just some time to read and write, we all need it!

  6. You’ve inspired me to be less annoyed to being woken up early on a Sunday. Next time instead of being grumpy- I’m going to try to notice and savor – maybe even slice about it!
